What is electroluminescent wire?

       Electroluminescent wire is a thin copper wire coated in a phosphorus which glows when an alternating current is applied to it. EL wire is a decorative,

flexible wire that glows much like neon. Other names include EL wire, EL fiber, EL cable and glowing wire. It generates no heat and can be taped or glued to
almost any surface. It can be used in a wide variety of applications----vehicle and structure decoration, safety and emergency lighting, toys, clothing etc., much
as rope light and Christmas lights are often used. Unlike these types of strand lights, EL wire is not a series of points but produces a 360 degree unbroken line
of visible light. Its thin diameter makes it more flexible and ideal for use in a variety of applications such as clothing and costumes products.
       EL wire comes in 10 basic colors and 9 kinds of diameters. Different colors can be spliced together with wire cutters. Since this wire runs on a parallel
circuit, it only needs to be properly terminated when trimmed. This can be accomplished using super glue, epoxy, heat-shrink tube, or other types of sealers to
protect the wire from moisture. Be sure to unplug wires before splicing. For special application, EL welted wire, 2.3mm diameter with 5mm PVC tail.

       EL wire's construction consists of five major components. First is a solid-copper wire core. This core is coated with phosphor. A very fine wire is spiral
-wound around the phosphor-coated copper core. This fine wire is electrically isolated from the copper core. Surrounding this 'sandwich' of copper core,
phosphor, and fine copper wire is a clear PVC sleeve. Finally, surrounding this thin, clear PVC sleeve is another clear, colored translucent, or fluorescent PVC
       The wire can be modeled as a coaxial capacitor with about 1 nF of capacitance per foot, and the rapid charging and discharging of this capacitor excites the
phosphorus to emit light. The colors of light that can be produced efficiently by phosphorus are limited, so many types of wire use an additional fluorescent
organic dye in the clear PVC sleeve to produce the final result. These organic dyes produce colors like red and purple when excited by the blue-green light of
the core.
       A resonant oscillator is typically used to generate the high voltage drive signal. Because of the capacitance load of the EL wire, using an inductive ( coiled )
transformer makes the driver a tuned IC oscillator, and therefore very efficient. The efficiency of EL wire is very high, and thus a few hundred feet of EL wire can
be driven by AA batteries for several hours.
       EL Wire sequences can flash Electroluminescent ( EL ) wire in a sequential pattern. EL wire requires a low-power, high-frequency driver to cause the wire
to illuminate. Most EL wire drivers simply light up one strand of EL wire in a constant-on mode, and some drivers may additionally have a blink, voice controlled,
or strobe mode. A sound-activated driver will light EL wire in synchronization to music, speech, or other ambient sound. But an EL wire sequencer will allow
multiple lengths of EL wire to be flashed in a desired sequence. The lengths of EL wire can all be the same color, or a combination of different colors.

       EL wire is copper wire covered with phosphorus then wrapped with two thin transmitter wires, sealed in a plastic skin. It requires AC and inverters or drivers
can be purchased for use with DC. There are many different models of drivers available. A 3V / 4.5V inverter will brightly drive about 0.098 feet (1 to 3 meters )
of electroluminescent wire; 6V inverter will driver about 0.33 feet ( 1 to 10 meters ); 12V is for car use, small inverter could driver 0.16 feet ( 1 to 5 meters ) , and
big inverter could driver 3.28 feet (1 to 100 meters ); 12V to 240 V ( 12V, 110V, 220V ) inverter, small one will driver 1.64 feet ( 1 to 50 meters ), big and thin one
will driver 3.28 feet ( 1 to 100 meters ), and the voltage and frequency could be adjust, too; at present, the biggest inverter will driver 6.56 feet ( 1-200 meters ),
iron box. The longer the wire, the less brightly the length will glow at a given frequency.

       EL wire drivers, sequencers are rated to drive ( or power, light up ) a specific length of EL wire, or a specific range. For example, one sequencer is rated
for 1-5 feet. It means that the sequencer could light up at least 1 feet, up to a maximum of 5 feet. If it less than 1 feet is used, there is a risk of burning out the
sequencer. If more than 5 feet is used, the EL wire will not light as brightly as intended, or not lighting. Connecting less than 3 feet ( about 1 meter ) should be
avoided as it might overload the driver. Other power sources can also be used, with a limiting resistor to step down the power, or a transformer to step it up, as in
the case of using a low-powered amplifier.
       There are commercially available EL wire sequencers capable of lighting three, four, five, or ten lengths of EL wire, or more. There are professional and
experimental sequencers with more than ten channels, but for most applications, ten channels is plenty. The sequencers usually have options for changing the
speed of the sequence, reversing the sequence, changing the order of the sequence, and sometimes, to change whether the first wires remain lit or go off as the
rest of the wires in the sequence are lit. EL wire sequencers tend to be smaller than a pack of cigarettes and the most are powered by batteries. This versatility
lends to the sequencers' use at night time events where mains electricity is not available.

       Since you probably won't want your el wire to start at the power sources, but at some distance from it, you can also splice regular wire as a lead to the point
at which you want the design to start. After a period of time, EL wire will become the dimmer, which happens quicker when powered by a higher frequency
( inverter ) . We suggest that at 1500Hz it will burn brightly for about 66 continuous days ( the best working conditions ), while at 400Hz it will remain bright for
about 1 year. EL wire can be used for any type of room decoration. Such as wrap it around your lampshade, make original wall art, write out your name or put it
around your mirror or headboard. You can also spruce up your bicycle, motorcycle or car interior. It's also great for advertisements and signs.
